"I look to subtlety
and nuance as the foundation for my aesthetic. The essence that I am seeking
in this aesthetic is a stripped, almost brutal, rawness.
Ash glazes have become
the essential focus in integrating form and surface in my work. I use
a fairly limited number of glaze recipes, applying slips for variability
of surface texture and color. By design, these variations often are not
visible at first glance but later reveal additional layers to the eye.
My forms are spare,
with large, simple areas, heavy textures, weighty bases, and substantial
rims and attachments. I focus on the foot and the rim of a form as the
defining elements. They are intentionally rough and crude to aid in this
definition. I use asymmetrical elements in the forms to impart vitality
and plasticity in the fired work. I avoid formal and elaborate composition
as I gravitate towards a quiet and subtle simplicity in the pots that
I make.
I want my pots to engage people where they live and to play a part in
their savoring of life. I make my pots to be part of people’s homes,
celebrations and private moments. My pots are directly about food and
flowers, cooking and display. For me, a successful pot is one that inspires
the viewer to imagine serving a favorite recipe, displaying their garden’s
blooms, or enjoying the sensual pleasures of a quiet dinner at home. These
are simple pots, with quiet but robust surfaces, made in a scale meant
to convey generosity." -Robert Briscoe
