"Cathedral windows, golden tabernacles, brocade vestments, baroque architecture, carvings and statues, and all of the elaborate décor and pageantry of the church shaped my early visual senses. My pottery with its intricate designs, bright colors and gilded accents reflects this appreciation for the decorative arts.
I am intrigued with the church’s attitude of poverty preached within its opulent surroundings. One of my favorite objects is an oval dish historically called a begging bowl. I paint it in my elaborate style and muse on the vision of a person using that object to ask for a handout. I like to paint simple everyday objects so elaborately that they stand out in a plainer simpler world but still entice the possessor to use them.
Regardless of the object there is one undeniable characteristic of my work. I love embellishment and find my soul in work that is made richer by layer after layer of decoration."
