VANESSA GRUBBS
ILLINOIS

All of these vases form a series called Media Mediocrity and were created during 2004. This series was inspired by my disillusionment with current television programming. Each vase is designed to hold
a specific type of flower. Each flower relates in some way to the context of the vase. I use ironic humor to call in to question the validity of the types of programming we are subjected to. This series
focuses on both TV commercials and reality television shows.

I have had my hands in clay as long as I can remember. Both of my parents have worked with clay, and I truly believe that I am at least 1/4 clay because as a child I literally consumed vast quantities of clay as my parents worked. In other words, clay is a part of me. I find that it to has its own - almost human nature. It is strong, yet fragile. It will throw petulant fits for no apparent reason, and when you least expect it, it surprises you with it ability to bend at your will.
I love clay because of this versatility. It can be a canvas, a lunar landscape or a drinking vessel, or can take many forms and meanings. For myself, I use it as a story telling device. Instead of telling stories on the pages of a book, I use clay to convey messages. My messages are anecdotes and are intended to influence ways of viewing the world. They celebrate beauty, and are harbingers of my distress.
My vessels have also become a soapbox for me to spotlight my messages and insights, and to ensure that my voice is heard. I illustrate my ideas using form, image and text to create a dialogue for the viewer to become engaged in for just a moment. I invite the viewer into my work by using familiar images and provocative notions about the state of the world, and about universal themes such as the powers of love, money and guns. In doing so, I hope that my work challenges and inspires viewers to look at the world in new ways.
Higher Education comments on current trends in higher ed. Using the Chronicle of Higher Education as my source, I trace and comment on issues such as grade inflation, gender bias and influence of money on colleges and universities. The forms used in this piece are based on trophies, similar to what you would see given for athletic achievement. The color plate is candy colored, to emphasis the irony of the trends I am commenting on.
