J. DANIEL MURPHY
UTAH

My ceramic vessels are created swiftly and directly on a slow spinning potter’s wheel. I work in series creating families of pots that are related and yet it is my intent that each piece stands on its own. Most of my pieces are fired in wood burning kilns without applied glazes to stoneware temperatures; colors and textures result from the interaction of wood, fire and clay. I strive to meld form and surface.

During the past two winters I have been painting infant images or what I call “cry-babies” on my pieces. Forms remain consistent to my style, yet these surfaces are very different. The pieces are painted with ash glazes colored green for go, red for stop and the infant images outlined in black which are crowded over all surfaces of the pieces. My inspiration for these images addresses both internal and external conditions as a new parent in a swiftly changing society.
