LAURIE SHAMAN
ILLINOIS

My ceramics combine a love of working with clay and the need to draw on its receptive surface. The vessel, whether a vase, a bowl or plate form, holds an interest for me as a utilitarian piece, as well as being an object that tells a story. I use all sides of the vessels to relate a dramatic moment in time or what I intend to be a flow of images.
The images most often used in my work include the human figure, animals, leaves, architectural elements and landscapes. I work with several drawing approaches on the surface of the pots. Sometimes I choose to simply utilize the spontaneity of brushwork for an atmospheric affect. For a woodcut type of surface, I use the “sgraffito” technique carving through a dark underglaze to reveal the white clay underneath. In other instances, I draw directly into the wet clay and later emphasize the lines with glazes and stains.
I strive to create figurative forms that convey a relationship to the drawing compositions. I hope to achieve a theatrical feeling through the pieces, in addition to conveying an appreciation of historical and classical references in art and literature.
