AYUMI HORIE
NEW YORK

Comfort has long been the focus of my work. I believe in art that serves people, be it physically or spiritually, because suffering is intrinsic to life. Pots are the perfect vehicle for imparting comfort to alleviate suffering.
The feeling of a warm mug in one's hands can be as valuable as the coffee it contains, and likewise, on a hot day, a crisp lip on a cup can be just as soothing as the cold water it holds. Pots may also act as conduits between people; an heirloom china set links grandchild and grandparent, or a plate serves food to two people falling in love.
There is comfort in visual beauty as well. I try to keep my working process honest and fresh, embracing unexpected events with improvisation. I want my glazing to have the sensibility of little jewels of candy, luscious and irresistible. Nostalgia for childhood pleasure nourishes us and pulls us in, as do drawings of animals. Throughout history, potters have often used animals as the subject of their pots' decorations. It is important to me to continue in the legacy of the ceramic tradition, yet I also feel content that these pots give a generous nod to modern design.

Originally from Maine, Ayumi Horie received her B.A. at Mount Holyoke College in 1991, her B.F.A. at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1996, and her M.F.A. at the University of Washington in 2000. For two years, she was a resident at the Archie Foundation in Montana and has also lectured and taught workshops across the U.S. and Germany. She is currently directing the clay program at the Women's Studio Workshop, teaching adjunct at SUNY New Paltz, and working as a studio potter. She is also a board member of the Archie Bray Foundation. More of her work can be seen at www. ayumihorie.com.
