AKAR is pleased to announce the fourth in a series of annual juried
exhibitions. The 2006 theme will be, “Forms and Shapes: Useful
Teapot” and will be juried by Ron Meyers. Meyers, who recently
retired from teaching ceramics at the University of Georgia, describes
his pottery as "utilitarian." His pottery is functional
and useful. His surface design is confrontational. He throws on
the wheel, then alters the shape to a less perfect form. His line
is loose and rough. He would like to see teapots, which are "Utilitarian,
useful, workable and inspired by the ritual of making tea."

AKAR has been
a ceramic gallery sice 1998 in downtown Iowa City, Iowa. We have
had shows with such artists as Maren Kloppman, Michael Simon, Chuck
Hindes, Randy Johnston and Jan McKeachie-Johnston and more. We decided
to start a yearly juried show in order to bring more variety to
our gallery and to help us with our constant search for ceramic
artists and potters. So we came up with "Forms and Shapes"
which translates in Sanskrit as AKAR. Each year we will focus on
different forms of function and forms of inspiration. For our second
show in 2004 we have choosen the box. We would like to see a wide
variety of both functional and sculptural interpretations in clay.
